The full 2026 programme is due in the first days of October, so this guide separates what is already confirmed from what will be updated once the complete schedule is released.

Rome Film Fest 2026 dates

The festival opens Tuesday October 13 and closes Sunday October 25. Organisers added an extra day to the 2026 edition after an increase in film submissions.

Opening film

Il rumore delle cose nuove by Paolo Genovese will open the festival in the Grand Public section. The opening ceremony will be hosted by Ema Stokholma.

What is already confirmed?

The official festival site has also announced a Lifetime Achievement Award for Javier Bardem. More screenings, guests and events will become clear with the full programme.

When will the full programme be published?

The Fondazione Cinema per Roma says the complete programme will be available in the first days of October. We will update this page when the official schedule is released.

Check the official Rome Film Fest website for live updates.

Where does the festival take place?

The main venue is the Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone, with additional cinema activity around Rome depending on the final programme.

How should a visitor fit it into a Rome trip?

Choose one screening or event you genuinely care about and build the rest of the day normally. Do not sacrifice an entire first-time itinerary just because the festival is happening.

Why the dates changed

The 2026 edition originally had a shorter window, but the Fondazione Cinema per Roma announced on September 4 that the festival would start one day earlier, on October 13. The reason given was the increase in submitted films and requests from independent producers and distributors. If you saved older travel information, make sure it reflects the updated October 13–25 dates.

When should you buy tickets?

The most useful moment to make decisions is when the full programme is published in early October. Do not buy an entire Rome itinerary around vague “festival time” before you know which screenings, encounters or red-carpet events interest you. Once the schedule is live, identify a short list first, then check ticket release and availability through the official festival channels.

How to read the programme without getting overwhelmed

Large festivals are easier when you start with intent rather than titles. Decide whether you care most about premieres, international cinema, Italian films, encounters with guests, restored classics or simply one high-profile evening. Then filter. Trying to read the entire programme as if every screening were equally relevant usually creates choice paralysis.

Where is the Auditorium and how should you plan around it?

The Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone is north of the historic centre, in the Flaminio area. It is not a natural five-minute walk from Trevi Fountain or the Colosseum. On a festival day, group nearby activities together: Villa Borghese, Piazza del Popolo, MAXXI or the Flaminio area are more coherent additions than the Vatican or Ancient Rome immediately before a fixed screening.

How early should you arrive?

For a normal screening, leave enough time for transport, ticket checks and finding the correct hall. For premieres, major guests or red-carpet activity, build in more margin. The festival is an event environment, not a neighbourhood cinema where arriving two minutes before the lights go down is a good strategy.

Can tourists attend or is it an industry event?

The Rome Film Fest is designed for public participation as well as industry activity. Once the programme and ticketing are live, visitors can choose individual screenings and events rather than needing accreditation for the whole festival. Always check the access rule attached to the specific event.

How to combine a screening with dinner

If your event finishes late, book dinner nearby or eat before the screening. Crossing Rome after a long premiere simply to reach a saved restaurant in Trastevere is rarely worth it. For an earlier event, you can move south toward Piazza del Popolo and the historic centre afterwards.

What if you are in Rome but do not have tickets?

Do not make the whole trip depend on last-minute festival access. Use the atmosphere as a bonus and keep a normal Rome evening available. The city has plenty of alternatives: neighbourhood dinner, illuminated centre, live performance or an evening food experience.

FAQ

Is the full programme available now?

Not yet as of September 20. The official festival page says it will be released in the first days of October.

Has the opening film been announced?

Yes. Paolo Genovese’s Il rumore delle cose nuove is confirmed as the opening film in the Grand Public section.

Should I stay near the Auditorium?

Not unless the festival is the main reason for your trip. For a general Rome holiday, choose accommodation for the whole itinerary and travel to the Auditorium for specific events.
