FAI Autumn Days Rome 2026 at a glance
- Dates: Saturday October 10 and Sunday October 11
- Best reason to go: access to unusual or normally closed places
- Access: varies by site; some visits may have capacity or booking rules
- Cost: many visits are linked to a voluntary contribution supporting FAI
- Essential step: check the official Rome list for the exact site before leaving
The point of this weekend is not discounted entry to the usual blockbuster museums. It is access to places that are normally closed, little known or difficult to visit.
When are FAI Autumn Days 2026?
- Saturday October 10, 2026
- Sunday October 11, 2026
The 2026 edition is the 15th FAI Autumn Days and includes visits generally supported by voluntary donations.
What opens in Rome?
FAI publishes the Rome openings through its interactive official list, with individual opening hours, accessibility and visit instructions. Because availability can change and some visits have limited capacity, use the official list rather than relying on an old roundup.

How should you choose?
Prioritise sites you cannot normally visit. There is little point using the weekend for a place you could see any other day unless the FAI programme adds access to a normally closed area.
How early should you go?
For limited-capacity or especially unusual openings, early is safer. Read the individual access notes carefully: some visits may use booking, priority for FAI members or specific meeting points.
Build the day around one FAI opening
Pick one special site, then let the rest of Rome stay normal. That makes the event an enhancement to the trip rather than an exhausting checklist.

What if it rains?
Check whether your chosen opening is indoors and keep a backup. Our rainy-day Rome guide is useful if outdoor visits become impractical.

How to choose a FAI opening that is actually worth your time
Do not choose by proximity alone. The strongest FAI visits are places you normally cannot enter, buildings where the weekend opens a special section, or sites that require context to appreciate. A museum that is open every week may be less valuable than an institutional palace or hidden architectural space accessible only for the event.
Read the access notes before travelling
Every site can have different rules: opening windows, last entry, accessibility, guided-group capacity, member priority or required reservations. The official FAI listing is part of the planning, not an optional final check. Screenshot the site page because details can be hard to find when you are already moving around Rome.
How many places should you attempt?
One excellent FAI opening plus one normal Rome activity is a better day than racing through four special sites. Queues and guided-group departures can create dead time, so leave margin. If two places are close together and access is straightforward, add a second; otherwise protect the experience you actually care about.
Best strategy for Saturday vs Sunday
Saturday is useful if you want to keep Sunday available for museums, churches or a day trip. Sunday works well if your chosen FAI site is the main purpose of the day. The better day is ultimately determined by the opening you want, because not every site necessarily uses identical hours.
Accessibility and children
Historic buildings, archaeological areas and institutional sites can have stairs, uneven surfaces or restricted access. Families should also check whether the visit is a long guided route or a free-flow opening. A fascinating palace for adults can become a difficult ninety-minute standing tour for small children.
What to do if your first choice is full
Have a nearby backup that does not depend on FAI capacity: a neighbourhood walk, church, market or normal museum. That prevents a sold-out visit from wasting half the day.
Who gets the most value from FAI Days?
Repeat visitors and architecture/history enthusiasts usually gain the most because the weekend reveals a layer of Rome that standard itineraries miss. First-time visitors can still enjoy it, but should not sacrifice the Colosseum or Vatican for a random opening simply because it is rare.
FAQ
Are all FAI sites free?
No single rule applies to every opening. Many visits are associated with a voluntary contribution, and some may have special conditions. Check the individual site listing.
Do I need to be a FAI member?
Not for every visit, but some openings may give members priority or dedicated access. The site-specific rules matter.
Can the programme change?
Yes. Check the official list close to the weekend, especially for times, access and capacity.
